SOFRONAS AND HOLLAND VISIT THE PODIUM ON STOPTECH BRAKES AT GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH
Los Angeles (April 18, 2011) – James Sofronas and Robb Holland each turned in podium-earning performances on StopTech brakes at the World Challenge part of the 2011 Grand Prix of Long Beach.
Local favorite James Sofronas of GMG Racing, who won the event in 2009, returned with an inspired performance for a second place finish in the GT class. Qualifying for 5th and dropping several places in dense traffic during the start of the race, Sofronas made up for it with masterful braking in the corners that had him on the heels of winning the race in the No. 14 GMG Porsche 911 GT3 when the checkered flag flew. The strong finish provides a nice boost to Sofronas in Drivers Championship points.
"The StopTech brakes gave me the edge," admitted Sofronas. "I had to outbrake all those cars consistently, as I don't have the horsepower to power by them, so I just put my head down and charged. I was picking off cars left and right in the braking zones. I had the same brakes at the end of the race that I had at the start, allowing me to keep the pressure on." Sofronas also earned the Clean Pass of the Race award for his efforts during the 31-lap, 60-mile race and now sits second in the Drivers Championship standings.
In the Touring Car class, Robb Holland from Gainesville, Georgia, finished third in the No. 66 K-Pax Racing Volvo C30 equipped with StopTech brakes. Holland, a new addition to K-Pax Racing, has been in the World Challenge Touring Car series since 2005. For those interested in numerology...this fifth top-five for Holland puts him finish puts him fifth in the Driver's Championship.
StopTech was in evidence throughout the Grand Prix weekend in Long Beach. The brakes were on all of the cars in the Toyota Pro/Celebrity race held on Saturday, which featured celebrities such as Kevin Jonas and Tito Ortiz racing in Scions. The company's brakes also graced the official pace cars and even the Indy Racing League's rescue vehicles.
The race from Long Beach will be broadcast April 30 at 2:30PM EST and again on May 2 at 3:30PM EST on Versus or can be viewed now at www.world-challengetv.com. The next stop in the exciting World Challenge Championships takes place April 29 through May 1, 2011, at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah.
